“Is it possible to compare cultures as diverse of those of Mongolia and Mexico, which have absorbed various influences over many epochs? Is it possible to bring them and Europe into one and the same conceptual framework? It is possible, in my view, because close comparison alone can bring differences or similarities to light. Oceans or continents may keep these three apart yet something connects them nonetheless, because spatial distance is not necessarily an obstacle to closeness. The connections are not always obvious but reappear in the most unexpected contexts, or somewhere else entirely. Myths likewise crop up in innumerable variations in different places: they take up or conceal local events, are told backwards, from finish to start, and in any case are subject to all kinds of change. For they have to keep on changing to survive.”Ulrike Ottinger

The exhibition Empreintes is a meeting imagined by the artist Ulrike Ottinger between her work and archaeological objects from the Cahn gallery. Throughout her work, Ulrike Ottinger unearths and revisits millennia-old myths, narratives from non-Western cultures and popular culture, and breaks with a history of stereotyped and dominant representations. In this context, photographs and excerpts from her films - both documentary and features from the 1970s to the 2000s - enters into dialogue with prehistoric and ancient artefacts: vases, flints, sculptures, statuettes and tableware. For this occasion she made a new film from excerpts from her films that will be shown.

Artist, photographer and filmmaker, Ulrike Ottinger was born in 1942 in Constance. She lives and works in Berlin. After having been a Pop Art artist in the 1960s in Paris, she has directed some twenty films, both feature and documentary, while continuing to work as a photographer and set designer. She is considered a leading artistic figure of the German avant-garde and was awarded the Berlinale Camera in 2020 for her filmography. Since the 1970s, Ulrike Ottinger has developed a signature cinema in which the themes of travel, ritual and exclusion are pivotal. Often referred to as the "Queen of Berlin's underground", she underlines an empowering process for gender minorities throughout her feature films. She has worked with Delphine Seyrig, Tabea Blumenschein, Magdalena Montezuma, Veruschka von Lehndorff, Eddie Constantine and Kurt Raab, among others.
