Interview with Katinka Bock

The second episode of Entretiens de Cahn Contemporary

Please scroll down for the French version

The interview was recorded on the occasion of Katinka Bock's solo exhibition, Some and any, fleeting, which takes place at Cahn Kunstraum in Basel, until the 2nd of July, a joint exhibition with her french gallery, Galerie Jocelyn Wolff. During the interview, the artist expands on notions of time, trace and memory that are pivotal in her artistic practice. She also talks about the ambivalent feeling that she had first towards archaeological objects and explains how photography was a way to integrate them into her exhibition.

Quotes from the interview:

"As stones or chewing gum are often piercings in the walls, in the streets, I integrate objects on this frieze. These are objects from my collection of small bronzes, cherry pits for example, but also objects from the Cahn collection. They come from different backgrounds. There are knives, needles for wearing clothes, rather everyday objects, items that are used by others. To decorate, to embellish, to point out this piercing which goes through the skin, through the wall."

"When I left after my first visit, the question of transmission and heritage was very present. It was a subject between Jean-David Cahn and me. How to transmit? What to transmit? What is unintentionally transmitted ? What does remain?"

"I revisited Pompeii recently, I felt very strongly this missing space that draws a jaw like pulled teeth: a volume that also carries something painful. On these foundations a city is drawn, mainly seen from the sky [...]. I thought of these inscriptions in the landscape, in a city, for this space [Cahn Kunstraum] which is large and low-ceilinged, which has very strong markings of a past, especially on the floor. There are like lines, streets, that are written. Like a city that places itself above another city, I wanted to follow and break the given lines."
